An expert on my field
Octavia Hill was a pioneer in social work. She was born in december of 1838 in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, England. In 1864 she started working in the poorest neightborhoods of London with poor and unemployed people, For her housing was her main concern. One of her most important works was the Hill system of housing where she spoke with the tenants about the problems that they have.
Another of her concerns was the enviroment because she contributed in the construction of gardens, parks for the childrens and the organization of excursions.
In general aspects, she contributed to improve the relationship between the social work and the people, recognized the humans rights and the profesional preparation of the volunteers.
Octavia Bill is an admirable woman for me, she hated philanthropy because she believed that it created resentment and kept people in poverty. She cared about people's self-esteem and confidence in their abilities, in other words, their empowerment and resilience. I think it's really admirable that a person of his time with such transgressive ideas could leave his legacy in the history of social work.
